The Daily Nugget- The Last Supper
Hi All
As Christians we have come to know today as Maundy Thursday(or Holy Thursday) the term “maundy” comes from the Latin word “mandatum” or command and in this instance refers to Jesus' commandment “ to love one another”(John 13:34-35). This day is significant in the Christian calendar because it represents The Last Supper(John 13-17) which took place between Jesus and His disciples the night before Our Lord was Crucified.Today our text gives us a little insight into some of the events that took place that evening.
Be Blessed and Encouraged
The Last Supper
23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, "This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." 25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.
(1 Corinthians 11:23-26)
The Last Supper is the final meal Jesus shared with his apostles in Jerusalem before his crucifixion during which Jesus identified bread as His body and wine as His blood(Mathew 26:26-28).By breaking bread and sharing the cup (his blood), Jesus replaced the Old Testament Passover lamb sacrifice with a new covenant, marking his role as the ultimate sacrifice for sin. As believers this is why we celebrate communion and in doing so we are obeying the instructions of Jesus when He said “do this in remembrance of me”(Luke 22:19).
During the last supper Jesus also washed His disciples feet(John 13:1-17)which was an act of great humility and showed His willingness to serve. The task of washing feet was normally given to the lowest of servants as feet would be really dirty due to walking in sandals. When Jesus willingly washed His disciples feet he set an example for all believers to follow, that is to serve one another in humility and love,Thank You Lord !
