The Daily Nugget- Saints And Sinners

In Christian theology, the phrase "saints and sinners" describes the dual identity, spiritual status, and moral reality of human beings. In the New Testament, the apostle Paul regularly addresses believers made righteous through faith in Jesus Christ.Despite this Christian doctrine and daily experiences show us that we as believers still battle an ongoing nature of sin,making us all simultaneously saints and sinners. However, although we are imperfect,God still offers us the gift of total forgiveness and eternal life with Him,through His son Jesus Christ(Ephesians 2:8-9).

8. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.

8. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.9. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

There are debates among Christians as to whether they are saints or sinners, but actually both are true.Historically and biblically, Christians are considered both saints and sinners at the same time. The Protestant Reformer Martin Luther famously summarized this truth with the Latin phrase “simuliustus et peccator”,which means "simultaneously righteous and a sinner".This can be confusing for many believers,but we can gain better understanding when we look at the two different categories.

In the new testament the word “saint” doesn't mean we need to be morally perfect people.The original Greek word “hagios” in its basic form means “ holy one” or “set apart”. God declares believers as righteous because of what Jesus accomplished when He went to the cross so we are saints by our spiritual standing and our identity in Christ.

Despite being a Christian and our new standing with God,we still live in a fallen world and still possess the natural inclination to go wrong(sin).The apostle Paul speaks of this internal struggle in the Bible when he writes about how he desires to do what is good, yet still finds himself struggling against sin (Romans 7).

In summary we are all sinners saved by our faith in Jesus and by the grace of God. Thank You Lord !
