The Daily Nugget- Presence Of The Spirit

Hi All

As Christians we believe our God is three in one:- Father Son and Holy Spirit, this belief is fundamental to our faith. In the book of Acts we read how The Holy Spirit descended on the day of Pentecost(Acts 2:1-11)and He is referred to around 89 times in the new testament, including in the book of John, where Jesus while comforting His disciples tells them“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you” (John 14:26). As believers the Holy Spirit lives in everyone of us to guide us and help us. Although the term “Holy Spirit” or  “The Spirit” Is associated with the new testament,as we will read in our text today He was around from the very beginning.Starting in Genesis 1:2 He is mentioned around 73 times in the old testament being referred to as  “The Spirit of The Lord” or “The Spirit of God”. From the very beginning the Holy Spirit was helping and guiding people just as He still does for us today.

Be Blessed and Encouraged

Presence of The Spirit

1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.   2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.   3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them.   4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.

(Acts 2:1-4)

The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.

(Genesis 1:2)

We read in the book of Acts about the day of Pentecost which is when the Holy Spirit descended among those gathered in the upper room(Acts 2:1-4),and there is a common belief amongst believers that this is the first time the Spirit appears. However the spirit first appears in the account of creation(Genesis 1:2)and throughout the old testament. In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit is revealed as Ruach, the dynamic, life-giving "breath" and "wind" of God. He was actively involved in creation, empowered specific leaders, judges, and prophets for divine tasks, and inspired Scripture, for example Bezalel’s God-given wisdom and craftsmanship enabled him to become the tabernacle’s chief architect (Exodus 31:1-5). We also read that the Spirit settled upon leaders needing help in administration (Numbers 11:16-17), warriors facing formidable tasks (Judges 6:34), and men called to proclaim God’s Word (Ezekiel 2:1-4).

In the old testament the indwelling of the "spirit" was usually temporary, but Jesus explained to His disciples that the Spirit’s involvement with believers would be different than before, saying “He abides with you and will be in you” (John 14:17). God’s Holy Spirit had come alongside them during their time with Jesus but would dwell within them following the ascension.Since Pentecost, every believer has received the Holy Spirit. If Jesus is the vine and we’re the branches, then the Spirit is the energizing sap that equips us. He no longer comes and goes but now remains permanently. He seals us in Christ, proof of the promise that we are forever in God’s presence (Ephesians 1:13-14).
