The Daily Nugget- Our Gracious God

In the scriptures the apostle Paul speaks of the grace of God when he says “But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift”(Ephesians 4:7).In Christian theology, calling God "gracious" means He freely shows kindness, mercy, and favour to humanity even though people do not earn or deserve it. One of the many names used by the Jews to describe God is “El Channun” which translates to “The Gracious God”. God's graciousness is an expression of love from God to us and not something we can earn. How wonderful that we have a God who will bless us,protect us and show us kindness, just because He loves us. Thank You Lord !

Our Gracious God

Then the LORD passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth.

(Exodus 34:6)

In the above passage God is speaking to Moses at Mount Sinai and we can see that what He says defines His character as He is declaring His mercy,grace,patience and love and in the bible we read many examples of God displaying undeserved grace.

Starting in Genesis when He clothed Adam and Eve after they had sinned(Genesis 3:21),we also read in Genesis how God chose to save Noah and His family from the flood and in doing so humanity was preserved(Genesis 6-8). In numbers we learn how God supplied the Israelites with manna despite their rebellion(Numbers 14-16).Rehab was a prostitute who was shown grace because she had hidden the spies sent out by Joshua(Joshua 2).

When we come to the new testament we learn of how God appointed Paul as an apostle(Acts 9:15) even though he had violently persecuted the early church.Paul himself acknowledged this saying “although I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man; but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief”(1Timothy 1:13).

To quote a wonderful old hymn:-

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father

There is no shadow of turning with Thee

Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not

As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be…Amen !
