The Daily Nugget- Be His Salt
Hi All
In Jesus’ day, salt had great value. In fact, Roman soldiers were sometimes paid in salt. That’s where we get the expression, “He’s not worth his salt.” Salt was valuable because it stopped the spread of rot in meat. In the days before refrigeration, people would cut meat into strips and embed it in salt to preserve it. As followers of Christ we are called to be the salt in a world that is ”rotting”.By being the “salt” we have the chance to “flavour” the lives of those around us and make them “thirsty” for the Living Waters Jesus speaks about “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.”(John 7:37-38)In other words Jesus is all the sustenance we will ever need.
Be Blessed and Encouraged
Be His Salt
Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.
(Colossians 4:6)
Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.
(Ephesians 4:29,)
“You are the salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13). These familiar words of Jesus suggest that our life is to accomplish the two benefits of salt: seasoning (attractiveness) and preservation. Paul applied the salt metaphor to speech when it came to relating to nonbelievers: Our speech should be graceful (kind, compassionate, encouraging, understanding),seasoned with salt.
So how can we apply the two uses of salt… seasoning and preservation…when speaking to people who may disagree with our beliefs ? We can start by steeping ourselves in the word of God.When we have scriptures wrapped around our brains like a helmet, our minds become filled with God's word. It starts to saturate our thoughts. As we fall asleep thinking of His promises and waking up with Him in our minds,it changes the patterns of our brains. We discover that we often have a word of encouragement for someone else. If we continually fill our minds with the knowledge of Christ,He will bring the needed words to mind in every situation.
Every good cook knows that salt enhances the flavour of food. It's not just a matter of giving your meals a salty taste. There is something about salt, used in the proper amounts, that brings out the taste of other ingredients and makes them more flavourful.Lets ask God to help us “salt” our conversations today with the flavour of His word.
